FLUID FUN: Kayaking and Canoeing Tips to Get Started

# Enroll for paddling instruction - even before you purchase a kayak or canoe. Classes will give you insight into the proper boat to purchase for your individual needs. Most paddlesport rentals, outdoor retailers and some community recreational centers can refer you to classes and paddling clubs.

# Always wear a personal floatation device (life jacket). Don't sit on it, stash it under your canoe seat or strap it?to the back deck of?your kayak. Wear it!Make sure it fits snugly to your body. Your PFD doesn't just keep you afloat...it protects your body and it will help keep your torso insulated when you?capsize your boat in cold water.

# Paddle with people. Never go alone.

# Know and practice buddy-assisted capsize recovery techniques.

# Drink lots of water before, during and after your outings on the water.

# Don't drink alcoholic beverages before or during boating outings. Alcohol changes your temperment and perspective.

# Join a paddling club and get connected with boating buddies and to improve your skills.

# Dress for the water's temperature, not just the air temperature - just in case your canoe or kayak tips over.

# Wear synthetic (fast drying) clothing.

# Wear good footwear like aqua shoes or neoprene booties to protect your feet from glass on the shoreline and debris unseen in the shallow water.

# You don't have to know how to swim to enjoy kayaking or canoeing. If you're not a good swimmer, it's?SAFER to enjoy boating?near the shoreline and on calm and protected waterways.
